What your Class 10 marks actually predict, and what they do not

Eighty per cent does not mean Science. Here is what the marks are good evidence for, what they are weak evidence for, and the question they cannot answer at all.

A Class 10 result arrives and the family holds a meeting. Someone says eighty-eight per cent, so obviously Science. Someone else says the cousin got ninety-one and took Commerce and is doing very well. By the end of the evening a fifteen year old has been assigned a stream by a number that was never designed to assign one.

The number is not useless. It is the single most informative thing you have about how this student handles school. It is also badly misread in almost every house it lands in, and the misreading has a shape worth knowing.

What the marks are genuinely good at

Prior attainment predicts later attainment better than anything else researchers have found to measure. When Saul Geiser and Maria Santelices tracked roughly eighty thousand students through four years of university, school grades beat every admissions test in the study, and the gap widened as the years went on rather than closing. Whatever school marks capture, it keeps mattering long after the exam that produced them.

That finding gets quoted at Indian families constantly, usually by someone selling coaching. It is worth being precise about what it says. School marks predict how a student copes with school-shaped work: sustained effort across months, sitting an exam calmly, revising something boring because it will be asked. Those habits transfer to Class 11 and to a degree. They are real and they are worth a great deal.

What the finding does not say is that a high percentage points anywhere in particular.

The aggregate hides the only thing you need

Eighty-eight per cent is an average of five subjects, and an average discards exactly the information a stream decision runs on. A student on eighty-eight might be sitting on ninety-six in Maths and seventy-four in Biology. Another student with the identical eighty-eight might be the reverse. One of them should think hard about PCM and the other should not, and the aggregate they share tells you nothing about which is which.

Two students with the same percentage can need opposite advice. The aggregate cannot tell you which one you are looking at.

So open the marksheet and read down the column instead of across the bottom. Maths and Science separately, and then against what each of those subjects actually turns into in Class 11, which is a different subject from the Class 10 version in at least two cases. Then ask a harder question about each: was that mark earned by understanding the subject, or by learning the pattern of the paper? Both produce good numbers in Class 10. Only one of them survives Class 11, where the syllabus roughly doubles and the questions stop repeating.

Most families can answer that question honestly if they sit with it for ten minutes. A student who can explain why a formula works, unprompted, to a younger sibling, understood it. A student who goes quiet when you ask why, but reproduces the steps perfectly, has learned the pattern. Neither is a moral failing. They just predict very different Class 11 experiences.

The comparison nobody can actually make

Boards do not mark alike, and everyone knows this while continuing to compare across them anyway. A CBSE eighty-five, an ICSE eighty-five and a state board eighty-five describe three different students, and no published conversion turns one into another. Any relative or neighbour comparing your child's percentage to another child's under a different board is performing arithmetic on units that do not match.

This matters more than it sounds, because the comparison usually runs in one direction. Families compare upwards, find their child short, and conclude the child should aim lower. The number that produced that conclusion was never a common currency.

Where the eighty per cent rule came from

Nobody wrote it down. It spread because it is easy to apply and because for a long time schools had section capacity to allocate and needed a rule that did not require argument. A cut-off does that job. It sorts a hundred students in an afternoon and no parent can dispute a number.

What it optimises for is administrative speed. It was never a claim about aptitude, and the schools applying it would mostly agree if you asked them directly.

If your school applies a hard cut-off

Ask what happens to a student who clears the Maths and Science marks but not the aggregate, and ask whether the Head of School can consider a case. Many schools have discretion they do not advertise, because advertising it would mean using it fifty times a year.

What actually deserves weight

Subject marks, read individually. Whether the understanding is real or procedural. What the student does with an unstructured afternoon, which tells you more about sustained interest than any stated preference does. And measured reasoning, if you have any, because a student can be strong at Maths in Class 10 and still find the abstraction of Class 11 Physics a different animal. That is the one input a marksheet cannot give you, and it is what a cognitive profile is actually for.

Stated interest belongs on the list too, with a caveat. Fifteen year olds report the interest they think is expected of them, particularly when a parent is in the room when they answer. Ask twice, on different days, and see whether the answer holds.

None of this is a formula. It is a set of inputs that disagree with each other more often than families expect, and the disagreements are the useful part. A student who wants Biology, scores well in Maths, and shows strong spatial reasoning is telling you something worth twenty minutes of conversation. A cut-off would have resolved that in four seconds and thrown the interesting part away.

The one decision that is not reversible

Class 11 subject combinations get fixed when the school submits its List of Candidates, and after that they are not changed. Families discover this deadline late with grim regularity, usually because nobody thought to mention it while the argument about Science versus Commerce was still running.

Ask your school for its LOC date now, while the decision is still open. If Maths is anywhere in the argument, ask about 041 against Applied Maths 241 in the same conversation, because that one needs the Head of School and runs to the same deadline. Everything else about this choice can be revisited. That date is the one that closes it.

The honest summary

Your child's Class 10 marks are strong evidence about effort, consistency and how they handle school. They are weak evidence about which subjects suit them, and no evidence at all about which career they should hold in mind. Treat the percentage as one witness in the case rather than the verdict, and go and find the other witnesses while you still have time to hear them.
