IPMAT Indore, Rohtak and JIPMAT are three different papers
Most students prepare for one and sit all three. The sectional clock at Indore alone changes what a good score looks like, and it is the one nobody practises against.
A student decides in June that management is the plan, and by August has registered for all three. IPMAT Indore, IPMAT Rohtak, JIPMAT. The forms are cheap and the dates rarely clash, so applying to all three is sensible. What follows is one preparation plan, one stack of mocks, and a quiet assumption that the three papers are versions of each other.
On the marking schemes the assumption almost holds. It dies on the clock, and the paper with the strictest clock is the one everybody wants.
The three papers, side by side
Strip out the branding and here is what a candidate sits.
- IPMAT Indore. A hundred and twenty minutes, three sections, forty minutes each, sealed. Quantitative Ability arrives in two separate blocks: multiple choice at plus four minus one, and Short Answer at plus four with nothing taken for a wrong answer. Verbal Ability is plus four minus one.
- IPMAT Rohtak. Three sections of forty multiple choice questions, plus four minus one throughout, and no sectional lock. Your time is yours to move around.
- JIPMAT. Three sections, about a hundred and fifty minutes, plus four minus one. This is the paper for IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu, and the gentlest of the three on time.
Read that list again with only the clock in mind. Two of these papers hand you one block of time and let you decide where it goes. Indore hands you three, and takes back whatever you fail to spend.
Forty minutes is the hardest thing about Indore
Being good at Quantitative Ability stops helping you the instant that section closes. There is no mechanism to convert the surplus into anything. A candidate who finishes Verbal in twenty-eight minutes at Rohtak has twelve extra minutes for arithmetic. The same candidate at Indore has twelve minutes of sitting still.
Follow that through. Every weakness at Indore gets its own protected forty minutes to sit in, and nothing can be sent to rescue it, so the even profile wins. At Rohtak and JIPMAT a strength can be spent anywhere on the paper, and the peak wins.
Almost nobody rehearses the part that does the damage, which is the stop. Candidates work through topic sheets untimed. Hardly any of them have ever had to abandon a question mid-working and begin the next section cold, which is what happens on the day.
The fix costs nothing. Sit the paper with three timers instead of one and obey them. Do that four times and you will learn which section you have been quietly subsidising with time borrowed from another. Most candidates are borrowing from Verbal to feed Quant and have never noticed, because nobody has ever timed them section by section.
Order matters more inside a sealed section, because there is no coming back after the break. The first pass has to be a sweep for cheap marks rather than a march from question one. Ninety seconds on the wrong question at minute thirty-eight is gone from the whole paper.
The Short Answer block, where a blank is pure loss
Indore's Short Answer questions carry plus four for a correct value and zero for a wrong one. No penalty. Break even accuracy is zero, so any chance above nothing beats an empty box. Our piece on negative marking works that arithmetic out in full. On the day the arithmetic is the easy part; what defeats candidates is the habit.
The habit is hard for one particular candidate. A student who has spent two years in a JEE-shaped classroom has been told, correctly, never to type a number they have not derived, because JEE Main puts minus one on its numerical answers as well as on its multiple choice. That instruction is right in that hall and expensive in this one, and it walks into Indore with them.
Be honest about where the value sits. Typing 47 into a box at random is worth close to nothing. The marks are in the half-solved question. You set up the equation and the clock ran out. You slipped on the last line of the working, or you cannot finish at all but you know the answer is a two digit multiple of six. Put a number in every one of those. Then, in the closing ninety seconds, fill whatever is still empty, because an empty box has a guaranteed value and that value is zero.
Nobody asks which stream you took
These are five year integrated programmes. A student walks in at seventeen or eighteen, straight out of Class 12, and comes out with a degree and an MBA. Every year families assume the route belongs to Commerce students, and every year that assumption keeps a capable Science student away from a form they were eligible to fill.
Commerce is not required. No question in any of the three papers asks about Accountancy, Business Studies or Economics; the whole examination is quantitative reasoning and reading under time, which is why the label on the certificate matters very little here, even though the reasoning behind a stream choice matters for almost everything else a Class 10 student decides.
There is one real asymmetry, and it is not about streams. A candidate who stopped studying mathematics after Class 10 will find both Quantitative blocks heavier going than a classmate who kept it. Which of the two CBSE Maths papers a student took is part of that as well, and we go through that choice separately. A Commerce student who kept Maths is in a stronger position than a Humanities student who dropped it, and neither fact is visible in the word on the marksheet.
Each institute sets its own Class 10 and Class 12 minimum, the three are not identical, and they get revised. Read the current notification for each exam before concluding that you qualify, and before concluding that you do not.
Who these courses suit, and who they do not
A five year commitment made at seventeen deserves more scrutiny than it gets. These programmes suit a student who is comfortable being assessed continuously and in front of other people, through presentations, group work and case discussion, rather than by three hour papers twice a year. The second thing they ask for is a taste for quantitative reasoning applied to untidy situations, rather than mathematics for its own sake. The condition families skip is the last: you are closing off engineering and medicine at seventeen rather than twenty-one, and the student should be able to say out loud why that is fine.
They suit one group badly, and it is a large group. A candidate who has decided that JEE looks frightening and management looks like the softer landing has misread the paper. Indore's Quantitative sections are no easier than JEE Main, only faster and more arithmetic-driven, sealed at forty minutes, with a serious reading test sitting next to them.
The alternative deserves a sentence, because no institute selling IPMAT coaching will offer it. A student can take any three year degree, find out what holds their attention, and sit CAT at twenty-one with three more years of self-knowledge. That is the route most Indian managers took. Calling it second best is a coaching institute's framing rather than a fact.
The honest position
If you have sat three Indore mocks under three separate forty minute clocks, your Verbal holds up when you cannot borrow time for it, and you have not left a Short Answer box empty in a month, you need to buy nothing from us or from anybody else. Sit all three papers regardless. Three clocks make three exams out of one syllabus, and a candidate who comes up short at Indore can be fine at Rohtak.
The candidates worth measuring are the ones whose totals have stopped moving and who cannot say why. A total is three different problems added together and disguised as one. Thin Quant knowledge lands a candidate on a given total. Reading too slow to survive a sealed forty minutes lands them on the same one, and so do ten Short Answer boxes that went back empty. The fixes are not interchangeable, and the number on its own points to none of them. LENS for IPM reports them apart, section by section and under the real sectional clock, which is the only condition under which the Indore paper tells you anything true.
If you want this measured rather than argued about
Reading about it only gets you so far. A sitting gives you the same conversation with numbers in it, and the report is allowed to come back saying you can carry this on your own.
