NEET is decided in Biology, and lost in Physics
Biology is half the paper and the half most students are already good at. Which is why the marks that decide a seat are usually the ones going missing somewhere else.
A mock result comes home and the total on the front is 545. The family looks at 545 and starts working out whether that will be enough for anything. Nobody turns to the second page, where the useful information is sitting: 332 out of 360 in Biology, 140 in Chemistry, 73 in Physics.
Seventy-three out of 180 is where that total came from. Physics is the one section on this paper with a hundred marks lying unclaimed, and this candidate has left almost all of them there.
What the 45/45/90 split does to the arithmetic
NEET UG puts 180 compulsory questions in front of you in 180 minutes for 720 marks. Physics 45 questions, Chemistry 45, Biology 90. So Biology carries 360 marks, exactly half the paper, and Physics and Chemistry carry 180 each.
A minute a question is therefore a fiction. Time yourself on twenty Biology and twenty Physics questions from a past paper. The Biology set finishes well inside twenty minutes and the Physics set does not come close.
The second consequence decides seats. NEET Biology sits very close to the NCERT text, and coverage and precise recall both respond to hours put in, so anyone who has done the work lands near the ceiling along with everyone else who has. Two well-prepared candidates might finish fifteen marks apart in Biology. There is no room above either of them. The same two can finish sixty marks apart in Physics without anything unusual happening at all, because application does not saturate the way recall does.
None of which makes Biology optional. It rarely wins the seat, because everyone has it, but losing thirty marks there still ends the argument, since nowhere else on the paper will give thirty marks back. Biology is the gate rather than the differentiator, and a gate deserves the time it needs, not the extra hours spent making yourself feel comfortable.
Working out which of the three is your problem
Take your last three mocks and, for each subject in each paper, write down three numbers instead of one: how many you attempted, how many you got right, how many marks went back in negative. Fifteen minutes of work, and it separates three failures that look identical inside a total.
Biology recall. A high attempt count with middling accuracy. You answered 88 of 90 and got 68 right. Read the twenty wrong ones and you will usually find you knew the chapter and missed the line. Coverage problem, with a boring remedy: the NCERT text read as a text, cover to cover, rather than opened as a revision aid.
Chemistry breadth. Split your Chemistry marks into Physical, Organic and Inorganic before concluding anything. The three behave like separate subjects sharing a name. Someone comfortable in Physical who is losing sixty marks in Inorganic has an Inorganic problem, and calling it a Chemistry problem sends them back over ground they already hold.
Physics application. The signature is nothing like the other two: a low attempt count and low accuracy on the few you did touch. You attempted 28 of 45 and got 14 right. Nobody produces that pattern through carelessness. You are not recognising the standard setups fast enough to start them.
After the clock stops, go back to the questions you never attempted and try them with unlimited time. Get most of them now and you have a pace problem. Still cannot do them and you have a syllabus problem. Those are two completely different six months, and the mock total cannot tell them apart.
That is arithmetic on your own answer sheet, not a personality test. Measured reasoning earns its place later, once those numbers keep saying the work is going in and the score is not moving.
The specific cost of guessing in Physics
NEET runs plus four, minus one, so break-even accuracy is twenty per cent and a blind guess between four options clears it comfortably. We work that arithmetic through in full elsewhere, and it holds on this paper as it does on the others.
It holds on one assumption, and Physics is where that assumption breaks. Twenty-five per cent assumes your errors scatter randomly across the options. The setter knows which factor of two you will drop, which sign you will lose, which mass you will use, and prints those results as options B and D. Do most of a derivation, produce a number, find it matching an option exactly, and you may be holding the option written for you.
Narrow the rule in Physics. A question you never started is a clean guess, and the usual logic applies to it. The dangerous one is the question where your working produced an answer you had no way to check, and that is exactly the one students tick hardest. Spend ten seconds on the units, or on what the expression does when a variable goes to zero. If that check fails and you cannot see why, treat the question as untouched. Elimination is more trustworthy in Biology, where ruling out two options leaves you a real coin flip at plus four, minus one.
One clock, free order, and the thing nobody rehearses
There is no sectional lock on NEET. Your 180 minutes are yours to spend in any order, on an offline OMR paper you are allowed to write on. Almost every candidate takes the printed order anyway, and almost none has tested an alternative under a real clock.
There is a case for Biology first: 360 marks at the fastest rate per mark, banked early, so you never meet ninety Biology questions with fifty minutes left. The case for Physics first is stronger for most people, because Physics is the only section whose accuracy moves with fatigue, and the only one asking you to hold three steps of working in your head. The same forty-five questions at minute ten and at minute one hundred and forty are not the same forty-five questions.
Settle it by experiment. Two full papers a week apart, same conditions, different orders, then compare the section scores rather than the totals. One warning: a paper sheet does not forgive a misalignment, so mark as you go and check your question number against the sheet at every page turn. The candidates who get this wrong changed their order for the first time in the hall.
Strong in Biology, weak in Physics, and not in trouble
This is the commonest NEET profile there is, and it reaches us described as a crisis about once a week. Most students take PCB because Biology holds their attention in the first place. Physics wants you to set up an unfamiliar situation from scratch, which is a different appetite, and a fifteen-year-old who found it hard in the first term of Class 11 tends to withdraw quietly instead of fighting it. After that the gap widens on its own, without anyone deciding anything.
NEET Physics is a bounded problem, though. It is not JEE Advanced. The paper asks you to recognise a standard configuration and run a standard method inside about ninety seconds, and you can count the configurations. Volume builds that recognition and reading theory does not, so forty problems a day beats four hours of notes. A move from 70 to 130 across six months is an ordinary outcome for someone who does problems daily rather than plans to.
It is also not evidence that the stream choice was wrong. A student strong in Biology and weak in Physics chose PCB correctly. The Physics on this paper is a toll on the road to medicine, and paying a toll is a different activity from turning around.
The honest position
If you can already say the sentence, you need to buy nothing from us. The sentence runs: my problem is Physics application, in these four chapters, and I am doing forty problems a day about it. Anyone who can say that has a correctly specified six months and should spend the money on question banks instead.
The candidate worth measuring is the other one. Five mocks, a total that has not moved, and no way to say whether the flatness comes from Biology recall, Chemistry breadth, Physics application or an attempt policy handing marks back. Four problems, four fixes, one identical symptom. Reading about it only gets you so far. A sitting gives you the same conversation with numbers in it, and the report is allowed to come back saying you can carry this on your own.
