BITSAT rewards a skill no other entrance exam tests
Finish all 130 questions and it offers you 12 more, worth three marks each, and locks everything behind you. Deciding whether to walk through that door is the exam.
A student marks the answer to their hundred and thirtieth question with eleven minutes left on the clock. The screen offers twelve more at three marks each, and warns that going forward shuts the hundred and thirty behind them for good. Most candidates meet that screen for the first time on the day, the worst possible moment to be doing arithmetic.
The option is priced, and the price is public long before anybody has a hall ticket. Ten minutes at a desk settles whether you take it.
What the screen is offering
BITSAT runs a hundred and thirty questions for three hundred and ninety marks in a hundred and eighty minutes, at plus three for a correct answer and minus one for a wrong one, with free movement between questions for the whole of that time. Answer every one of the hundred and thirty, with time still on the clock, and the paper offers you twelve additional questions on identical terms. Accept, and the original hundred and thirty close for good, with no way back to change or check a single answer. The ceiling rises from three hundred and ninety to four hundred and twenty-six.
Eighty-three seconds a question. That is a hundred and eighty minutes divided by a hundred and thirty, and it shapes the paper. JEE Main allows a hundred and forty-four seconds for each of its seventy-five questions. NEET allows sixty for each of its hundred and eighty. BITSAT sits between the two, and candidates who have trained entirely on JEE mocks find the clock unfamiliar in the first twenty minutes.
Twelve questions at the same price
The twelve carry no premium. Same three marks, same minus one, same four options. A bonus question is worth what any other question is worth, so the appeal of the round is quantity and nothing else.
Price it properly. Under a scheme awarding c for a correct answer and taking w for a wrong one, break even accuracy is w divided by (c plus w); on plus three minus one that lands at twenty-five per cent, and we work the arithmetic through in full here. A four option paper hands a blind guess twenty-five per cent. A bonus question you have no purchase on therefore averages zero, which is also what declining the round pays.
Expected marks on any one question come to four times your accuracy, minus one. At fifty per cent accuracy a bonus question returns one mark and the round is worth twelve. At sixty per cent it returns 1.4 marks, so about seventeen. At seventy per cent, a shade under twenty-two. Every number in that range assumes you are working at your usual standard in the closing minutes of a three hour paper, on unseen questions, with nothing revisitable. Few people are.
Why rushing the hundred and thirty loses
Candidates imagine the trade is time for questions: hurry the main paper, bank ten minutes, spend them on the bonus. Run it at real numbers and it falls apart.
Hurrying costs accuracy. On this paper accuracy is worth four marks a question, so across a hundred and thirty questions a single percentage point comes to 5.2 marks, and three percentage points to 15.6, set against a bonus round paying about 16.8 at sixty per cent.
Three points is not much to lose. A student at seventy-five per cent when reading a question properly, and seventy-two with the clock at the back of their mind, is already even before the twelfth bonus question appears. Ten points down, which is what panic does to a candidate in the last hour, and the rush has cost fifty-two marks to win seventeen.
Most candidates who never see that screen still had time on the clock. What they did not have was an answer in every box, because the condition is coverage and nothing but coverage: all hundred and thirty filled. A student who left eighteen untouched because they were unsure has locked the door from the inside.
Filling those eighteen costs almost nothing. A blind guess at plus three minus one returns zero in expectation, and ruling out one option turns it positive whether the bonus round exists or not. The last five minutes should go on blanks in any case, so the door opens as a side effect of a habit you ought to have already.
Order matters more on this paper than on any other
Your hundred and eighty minutes are unbroken. Nothing is sealed, nothing expires, and you can leave Physics to the final forty minutes if that is the sensible call. Set that against IPMAT Indore, where each section closes at forty minutes whether you are finished or not, and where the sectional locks change the entire approach. Spend those unbroken minutes going deep on twenty hard questions and you will never reach the bonus screen, because the condition rewards coverage and not depth.
Three passes fit inside a hundred and eighty minutes, and most strong scorers run something close to this.
- First pass, about a hundred minutes. Everything you can settle inside a minute. English Proficiency and Logical Reasoning belong here, because they are the cheapest marks on the paper.
- Second pass, about fifty minutes. The questions within reach with working on the rough sheet. This is where the marks are, and it is the pass a hurried candidate cuts short.
- Third pass, five to ten minutes. Fill every remaining blank, eliminating an option wherever you can, and resolve anything you flagged earlier.
A flag is worth nothing once the door closes, so anything you meant to return to has to be finished before you accept the round. There is no second warning.
Write it down now and hold to it: if all hundred and thirty are answered, the review pass is done and eight or more minutes remain, take the round. Otherwise spend what is left on the paper you have already read. A rule written in a quiet room beats a judgment made at minute one hundred and seventy.
The board gate families forget
Admission to BITS requires at least seventy-five per cent aggregate in the board examination as well as the BITSAT score. That seventy-five is a gate, not a ranking input. Clear it and your board marks stop counting, because ninety-six per cent buys you nothing over seventy-six. Miss it and a BITSAT score of three hundred and seventy will not admit you.
Families with a serious BITSAT candidate routinely let boards drift through the final three months, on the sensible-sounding argument that entrance marks are what decide things. For BITS there is a floor under that argument. A student sitting on seventy-eight per cent in the pre-boards has two obligations at once, and the board one is pass or fail.
The honest position
A student already finishing all hundred and thirty in mocks with ten minutes spare, holding accuracy above seventy per cent and clearing seventy-five in school without drama, needs nothing from us or from anybody else. Take the round every time and go back to Chemistry.
The candidates worth measuring are the ones whose mocks have settled at three hundred and ten and will not move. Three hundred and ten tells you nothing about why. It might be twenty-two blanks left on the table, or accuracy leaking in the second pass, or a first pass so slow that Mathematics never got a fair look. Three problems, three fixes, and a student who guesses which one they have loses a month on the wrong one.
